I feel that the “blame” should go to a lot of factors, including the sex-positive feminists, but also including all those 70′s rock and singer-songwriter songs celebrating noncommitment. Also the whole 80′s full court press in popular culture making it seem like every woman who wanted a relationship was a bunny boiler. There were lots of books in the 80′s advising women not to count on a man and to make sure she could financially support herself, not wait till Prince Charming came along to start living her life. But there was also this thought that got started in the 80′s that if a couple had casual sex or ongoing casual sex and the woman wanted it to turn into a relationship, she was “psycho.” I really don’t think feminism is responsible for the entirety of the popularization of casual sex. There was a lot of cheerleading for casual sex in rock music and the movies. The 80′s really seemed to be the era when if someone wanted more of a relationship after casual sex, they were deemed “psycho.” I wish feminism would talk more about it being okay to have emotions that didn’t do well with casual sex…but if any part of feminism is to “blame” for cheerleading of casual sex, I think it is more the sex-positive “do-me” feminism that came along in the 90′s.

I agree with you. As I said above to An Unmarried Man, I really wasn’t addressing hookup culture here, though you can certainly be excused for thinking so! I should have been clearer perhaps. In a nutshell, I don’t think GS displayed much common sense here, and she had to really stretch to claim that the goals of feminism have not been met, and then some.

Now it just sounds like their defense was “we just wanted to unlock Pandora’s Box, not actually open it”. I’m sure you’re right, no one knew how things would look in 40 years. Now that we know, we ought to be honest about what needs to be fixed.
